Torre Qvarto, 1964

Cirillo Farussi

This wine is from Puglia. Torre Qvarto is a 5000ha family owned estate dating back to 1418. The Torre Qvarto 1973 is made from the long lived primitivo grape, a dark-skinned variety related to Zinfandel. The wines are tannic and bitter in their youth but over time the tannins will have mellowed leaving a smooth wine with some fruit.

Valpolicella, 1964

The Valpolicella zone is bordered to the west by the Bardolino DOC, located along the banks of Lake Garda, which produces similar wines to basic Valpolicella using many of the same grapes. The historical "heart" of Valpolicella winemaking is in the Monti Lessini hills located northwest of the town of Verona. In 1968, the boundaries of the region were extended far eastward towards the DOC production zone of Soave and south to the plains of the northern bank of the Po river and its tributary the Adige.

Valtellina, 1964

Villa Valtelina

Valtellina is one of Italy’s most dramatic wine regions, located in Lombardy, the vineyards are located on steep mountains. The principal grape variety is Chiavennasca (the local name for Piedmont’s Nebbiolo and an Italian grape varietal that has been cultivated since medieval times here). The DOCG wines are generally comprised of at least 90% Chiavennasca and then blended with other quality local grapes like Brugnola, Rossola, Pignola. Then there is a DOC Valtellina Rosso (also called Rosso di Valtellina DOC) which requires at least 80% of the blend be Chiavennasca and does not have minimum ageing requirements.

Barolo, 1964

Scanavino Giovanni

This wine shows the magic of an aged Barolo. It starts with a beautiful Piedmontese nose of chocolate, damp wood, soy sauce and spice surrounded by deep, slightly heady aromas of dried dates, cherries and figs, all wreathed by classic notes of rose and tar. The palate is still just about right - still bright with acidity, but with tannins that had softened out, it showed lovely earthy flavours specked with wood spice, smoky tar and flowers floating around a delicious mouthful of sour cherries as the wine moved into a nice fresh finish that ended with a touch of savoury earth and soy notes ringed with a little halo of rose petals.

Pauillac Premiere Grand Cru Classe (Henry Moore label)

- From magnum: Surprisingly good as I was not expecting much based on drinking other disappointing 1964 Bordeaux over the years. However, HS fill with pretty good cork was in beautiful shape. Color was brick red and showed nice tart cherries and fresh earthy aromas. The flavor profile showed reasonable concentration and while a bit earthy and a tad acidic, was full of dried red fruits and wonderful spices. While tannins were fully resolved the acid kept this reasonably fresh and inviting. A nice long rustic earthy finish kept me coming back for more.

Corbieres, 1964

Corbières is an Appellation d'origine contrôlée (AOC) for wine in the Languedoc-Roussillon, France, and it is this region's largest AOC, responsible for 46 per cent of the region's AOC wine production in 2005. Red wine dominates the production in Corbières with almost 95 per cent, with 3.5 per cent rosé wine and 2 per cent white wine making up the balance. Carignan is the most common grape variety. The AOC was created in 1985, covers 13,500 hectares (33,000 acres) of vineyards and produces an average of 554,000 hectoliters of wine per year, corresponding to 74 million bottles
